Lighten the Load to Move Forward

Sometimes the best business lessons come from unexpected places -like a cruise. In May, my wife and I embarked on a sixteen-day European river cruise with hundreds of fellow Oregon State University alumni. Go Beavers!

Taking the trip gave me lots of reasons to be thankful, including sharing it with Linda. I am also grateful that my health allowed me to experience this trip of a lifetime, even on the days I needed to rest.

Reduced winter snowpack has made European rivers increasingly shallow -a growing problem for cruises like ours from Amsterdam to Budapest. When we reached Nuremburg, workers let us know that we would need to disembark for a packed, 12-hour day of excursions followed by drop-off at a different cruise ship port. The river had become exceptionally shallow in this area and we needed to lighten the load. I wasn’t feeling well that day and didn’t know if I could safely be away from the ship for a full 12 hours.

This meant I was one of the few who stayed behind and got to experience how they managed to navigate these shallow areas of the river. They asked most of the passengers to disembark and discharged all the water from the boat, only taking it back on when they reached the next port. Lying in bed, I listened to the hull crackling and popping like ice in a glass as the ship’s hull scraped the shallow riverbed. I found out later we were one of the last ships to pass through this area because of the shallow depths.

When navigating tricky waters, sometimes the best way forward is to lighten your load and focus on what truly matters.

Divorced from Grooming and Making a Difference

Our friends and coaching clients, Cats in the City, have reason to celebrate! Not only are they starting to elevate the concept of TANDEM Cat® but they are also being taken seriously by the scientific, veterinarian community.

According to owners Shawn and Daniel Lioyryan, TANDEM Cat® isn’t grooming. It’s a clinical care system that happens to use grooming as a vehicle for delivering trauma-informed support and physical recovery. This form of care can improve health outcomes and lengthen life spans for geriatric cats and the owners who love them.

Fur Matting Can Lead to Health Complications

Recently, their article Trauma-Free Coat Restoration in an 18-Year-Old Medically Fragile Cat: A Non-Sedated, Manual Protocol Based on Tactile Fluency and Somatic Stabilization was submitted to the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery and moved beyond simple formatting edits into content-level review. This means their work is being taken seriously as contribution to clinical science, establishing Cats in the City as a center for feline health excellence. Not only are they improving the quality of life for cats and their caregivers, but they are potentially saving them money on otherwise intrusive tests while lengthening the life of a special friend. Kudos!

Of Fruit Juice and Fertilizer

I’ll never forget the day I joined my clients at Forest Hills Farms for strawberry harvest. The sun beat unyieldingly down upon our necks. It was swelteringly hot as harvesters raced through the fields. Unlike many other fruits, strawberries will not continue to ripen after they are picked. So, to ensure a delicious crop, farmers must wait until the very last minute to harvest. When they do, time is ticking. Harvest season is a race against both time and economics.

As towers of overloaded crates of delicious, ripe strawberries were carefully stacked onto the truck bed, I began to notice strawberry juice pouring out from the bottom and landing in a puddle of sticky juice - and worst, lost revenue. The amazing harvest they’d just picked was going bad in the process of bringing them to market.

Harvest time is the most demanding time for all farmers. They must capture fruit at the top of its season and do whatever it takes to quickly get them to consumers. Pinched by input costs like increased labor expenses, shipping and fertilizer — they have very little ability to influence the cost of goods sold. This means the only way to control profitability is to reduce input costs or to figure out how to do more with less.

Local farmers have had to get more creative and more productive to avoid becoming the next corporate buy-out. So, the next time you shop, consider the farmers who grew your produce. Choose to buy locally. Choose to buy ethically.
