Comparison is the Thief of Joy
I love everything about golf! I love playing it. I love watching it in-person and even watching it on TV. One of my favorite ways to spend a few hours on Sundays are to watch tournaments. More often than not, the leader headed into Sunday screws up. It’s truly ponderous. How can a person play really good golf for 2-3 days and then mess up when pressure is on the line?
Jim Murphy, author of Inner Excellence is a professional golfer and he’s observed it too. He suggests that avoiding comparison is critical. Something Theodore Roosevelt knew all too well when he first said that “Comparison is the thief of joy.”

Gif by themasters on Giphy
Of course it’s important to do your best, but the moment you start comparing yourself to someone else, you introduce tension. This tension creeps in and you probably don’t even know it. In high stakes games, it doesn’t take much tension in your body to make the ball go completely off-course.

Giphy Golfter Swings
Hitting fields are narrow. Distances are far. The penalty for missing the fairway can be dramatic. The other weekend I watched as the person who had been leading the entire tournament lost by one stroke. His competitor made a 64-foot putt on a previous hole that helped him pull ahead.
In most cases, when you have nothing to lose, you also have no tension in your body. The moment you start comparing yourself and see you have something to lose, that’s when the tension kicks in.
It can impact your golf game or really any other physical activity performed at a high level. For instance, the same is true in baseball. Oregon State University’s baseball team won the regionals and superregionals and then went to the world series. They were seeded #1 in their bracket against the top 8 teams in the nation – the 8th time OSU has been in the college world series. But, it doesn’t take much tension in baseball to throw things offline either. Tension in the body creates a lot of unnecessary foul balls. This year OSU ended their winning season at 48-16-1 after losing to Louisville.
There are lots of applications for this in business too. Come learn some of the positive ways these lessons can be leveraged as Dave Chin explores Inner Excellence by Jim Murphy on September 18th.
